Project Runway Season 7: Place Your Bets

I admit it. I’m hooked on Project Runway. Despite the jump from Bravo to Lifetime, and last season’s quirky Los Angeles vacation, the show remains one of the most compelling on television and I rarely miss an episode (thank you, Tivo).

There are many imitators out there, but there is a reason that Runway remains the best fashion program on television: Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The two are a nice contrast in personalities and they both know their subject exceedingly well. Tim is a stickler for detail and he prefers a classic fashion style over flash. Heidi brings the heat, both with her stunning good looks and her sharp tongue. They are a dynamic duo and their chemistry is wonderful. Toss in the always entertaining Michael Kors and the legendary “Don’t Bore Nina” Garcia, and the show is nearly unbeatable.

This season’s return to New York shows Runway with a full head of steam. Season seven is underway and last night’s episode (episode two) was a classic. The contestants were taken to a potato farm and given burlap potato sacks to construct their dresses with. The results were astounding. Several designers (especially winning designer Jay Nicolas Sario) took what was a coarse, flat, rather drab fabric and turned it into something special.

Congratulations to Jay and also Mila who came out with a super cool, trendy dress as well. If you missed Ping’s “baby got back” dress, then here you go.

Ouch. Poor Ping. She really is creative and I think she has great potential. But, this dress really had some problems.

With the season off to a great start, everyone is starting to pick favorites. It might be a bit early to come up with names yet, and here’s why. Runway is not a sprint, it is truly a marathon and the winner is rarely the designer that can, on their best day, beat everyone else on their best day. It favors the good and consistent over the great and inconsistent. You need to avoid the bottom of the list every week and make it to Bryant Park. Then, as the saying goes, anything can happen.

Runway is off to a solid start and the competition is (as Christian Siriano would say) is fierce. With that said, we ask you, dear FabGoods fans: Who do you think is going to win?
